ENGAGE & DEVELOP YOUR CHILDReading is an adventure, and every page you turn offers excitement, drama and an opportunity to talk. Once you finish the story, the conversation can begin.
At each book's end is a time-to-talk section. The objective is to engage and develop your child in the skill of meaningful conversation.
Small Talk. Small Talk reflects on what you have just read, asking you to give basic answers to simple questions. This step builds a conversation and provides a positive platform to delve deeper. Take turns to ask and answer questions.
Common Ground. Common ground teaches us to give our opinions in a safe and secure environment. Parents are encouraged to go first and model appropriate language and emotions.
Personal Feelings. Personal feelings this where you jump into more profound questions that spark and ignite conversation.Love Reading
CREATE A LOVE OF READINGRead aloud together with your child. Model and Engage. Your child learns through copying you. So snuggle up, laugh together and talk about what you are reading.Point and Read with your child. Point at the word you are saying and move your finger along as you read. Pause when you need to take a breath, and let your finger jump with excitement when the story directs you. Your child might not understand the words or characters, but they grasp the concept of flow, direction and energy you are modelling.Engage in the story. The narrative pulls your child into a new world you can discuss and explore together. Please talk about the characters, the choices they make, how the story makes you feel and what you might do the same or differently.Read as a routine. Make bedtime stories an event and occasion to draw closer, even a reason for your child to be excited about going to bed.Bringing this all together conveys that reading is important and fun.
